Networking Etiquette 101 — Is small talk the new Rude?
LinkedIn is a networking platform for businesses and professionals from all fields ranging from food service to major tech companies. Yet, I have found that there has been a significant change in the culture in recent years.
Instead of being a collaborative space where professionals can network with others in their field, it has now become a hub for fake offers, inconsequential small talk, and sales pitches. I consider these characteristics of LinkedIn to be some of the greatest no-nos in networking etiquette.
As networking culture has shifted from in-person networking events to digital networking platforms such as LinkedIn, it is important to redefine the rules of networking etiquette. Because of this, I have put together my list of what I consider to be some of the most important networking tips for LinkedIn. So, here’s my crash course on networking etiquette.
1. Never Start With Small Talk
In real life, I hate small talk just as much as the next person. It is cold, impersonal, and seems to go nowhere. But somehow, I hate small talk on LinkedIn even more. In fact, most would go as far as to say small talk is the new rude.
